Turtles VS Ventures

Turtles VS Ventures

The name of Turtles is quite familiar for me. Even though they debuted 40years ago, their song is alive now in everywhere. 'Happy together' came to me as an OST. The turtles was started from friends and had some member changes in the history. They was called as sulf rock group. In 1967, they spent three weeks at number one on the American charts and proved to be one of the biggest hits of the years. Their reputation could be better by the song; Happy Together.

In 1984, as "The Turtles ...featuring Flo & Eddie", (together with three other groups from the 60's; Gary Puckett, Spanky & Our Gang, and The Association), they travelled across the U.S. and Canada as "The Happy Together Tour". The tour was very successful and was the standard bearer for a resurgence in the interest of 60's music. The following year, they got together with The Buckinghams, Gary Lewis, and The Grass Roots, for a 1985 version. For the eight months the tour was on the road it was consistently one of the top 10 grossing tours in the country.

Kaylan and Volman continued to appear as Flo and Eddie into the new millennium. In the Fall of 2004, the pair co-produced a new remastered collection of their hits called "Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles". The band remains a staple of rock and roll oldies radio, getting over 20,000 plays a year.

Happy Together

(G. Bonner - A. Gordon)

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight

So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine

So happy together

I can't see me lovin' nobody but you

For all my life

When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue

For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me

So happy together

[repeat chorus]

[repeat verse 3; harmonize on first three lines]

Vocal interlude [note that final chord is different from chorus]:

Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

[repeat verse 3]

So happy together

How is the weather

So happy together

We're happy together

So happy together

Happy together

So happy together

So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)

The Ventures are an instrumental rock band formed in 1958, by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, two Seattle masonry workers. They have contributed, as well, to the surf music genre. Ventures started members from 4 members (Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Base, Drum). The interesting character of this band used only some instruments without voices. Their records have been sold 90 million so far. Their song was re-made by a lot of singers in the world. One of their song, 'Shanghied' was most popular twist dance song in 60s'. Pipeline in the album "The Ventures Surfing" lead the surfing song with beach boys. The ventures was going on from 1960s to now in Japan and Europe. Their style guitar has been popular among the mania of guitar. There were some member changes by many reason, but they have kept their reputation so far. Given their tremendous cultural influence, both in the US and Japan, as well as their ranking as 6th biggest album-selling pop act of the 1960's, Ventures fans and supporters have been campaigning for the past several years to have The Ventures inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

Running scared, and out of my mind
No place is homeOn these streets I reach for the sky
With a gun in my handAnd the world in my sightsI face every day
But still you turn to look at me and say
Hold me now hold me whenWe're running round in circles once again
Hold me now hold me whenWe feel in need of comfort now and then
Hold me now hold me whenWe're turning round and burning down
Hide by day, and move on by night
Wrap me in chainsSet me free when there is no light
You can't compete with these lies and deceit
That's my evil wayBut still you dare to look at me and say
Somehow these days have turned into yearsI'm finding it hard to reach you
We can't begin to count the tears
It's killing me but still I sayDon't ever let this moment slip away
I'll never find, my peace of mind
For ever falling down these mountains
I can't climbNo words would rhyme
Were you to disappear again
You know that I never could get over it

Watching God_Civil Right_My 14th movie

Watching God_Civil Right_My 14th movie

I really enjoyed this movie. First, I could find the story of black people and I could see gorgeous Halle Berry in it. This movie is basically showing about one woman life in black society. Miss. Janie was living with her grandmother rural area and had to get married to older and richer man. Even though she can have quite nice life with him, she had a desire to be free. One day, she met Joe and moved out her life to new life with him. Joe supported her life happily without freedom. She had felt that she lived her life for husband. Joe was so ambitious that he made the first incorporated colored town in America. It is just Easton Ville for colored people. They called her Mrs. Mayor stark and Joe force her to keep dignity and obedience as a wife of Mayor. She felt like a bird in bird cage. Time passed away 20 years and the couple was in routine and the gap of communication. Mayor died and everyone sobbed in his funeral. She felt the freedom from her husband and met Tea Cake and had felt free as the first time of life. They hung out everyday with spending money and everyone worried about her life with Tea Cake. One day, they moved to some place like heaven camp which has a lot of person who want to have freedom but big hurricane screwed up their new life. Tea cake was bitten off by crazy dog. He was going to be crazy and shoot the gun each other. Unfortunately, the guy was died with sorrow of her. Even though she really loved him and found her real life by him, they could not continue on their love. At the last scene, she is asking herself. “What are you doing?” “I am watching god”.

I heard a lot of music genre in this movie. Blues, Regtime and gospel could be found by my learned ear. Ragtime had drum, trumpet and banjo in the band. It was so rhythmical that I followed the rhythm. Gospel was the scene of the ceremony of light. I heard this song a lot in the church, “Let it shine…”. Tea cake played harmonica in this movie. Background music was so challenge to me for recognizing which kind of music.

From 1960 to 1980, we call this period as ‘Civil Right Movement Period’. In this period,
Black and women started to realize their power together and advocate their proper right.
Racial discrimination was a hot potato among American. In this movie, I had a crucial
question about their life.

Why did they should live separated from white people?

This movie showed detail life about black people. It was so impressive to me!!!!

Memphis Belle_WW ll_ My 13th Movie

Memphis Belle_WW ll_ My 13th Movie

In the summer of 1943, a fierce battle raged in the skies of Europe.

This movie started from the scene of England on 16 May 1943. Young volunteer army was waiting for joining the war with the fear of death. They had a party before the D-day for getting rid of fear. On D-day, Memphis belle flied to German military place to drop bomb rain. They struggled with attack from German military and some colleagues were fallen down. Even though they were attacked by German, they did their job properly.

It is also typical war movie. At the end of the movie, some impressive sentence was going up the scene.

"During the WW ll, 200 thousand air crews was died in western Europe". Yes, it was a big pity to all. After WW ll, the power of the world moved to US and Soviet Union and started cold period. Interesting thing after WW ll, US was worried about spread of the communism in German and Europe, so US showed the Marshal Plan for ruined German. It made German more democratic country than before. Most of countries did not agree with this generous plan but US kept two things in mind; Spread of Communism and World peace.

This movie was also nice one for thinking about WW ll and the world.

The Thin Red Line_WW ll_my 12th movie

The Thin Red Line_WW ll_my 12th movie

We have heard about ww2 a lot in our class and our life.
Do you think you know what the war is exactly?
I think we can never know about the war, unless if we experience the war.

This movie have shown that how ww2 was going on inside. This movie is actually based on the novel by James Jones.

There were peaceful island but it was changed to the war place between US army and Japanese army. US army was in disadvantage position down the hill and they should occupy the hill against Japanese army. They struggled to conquer the hill. A lot of companies had lost their life during the war.

I could find colleague spirit between them when they were fighting against Japanese army. They had got the order from the top and just followed the order, it was dangerous for their life though. Their unintentional fighting leads the tragedy of them. Human has been so tiny thing in front of the war. WW ll has left a lot of people died and bad memory. Through WW ll, US lost a lot of valuable life of army but had got economic development by selling war material.

I have been wondering about the peace without war in the world. After next movie, I will talk about changes by WW ll in the world.

Pride of Yankees_Great Depression_My 11th Movie

Pride of Yankees_Great Depression_My 11th Movie

There were a lot of brilliant base ball player in MLB history, but there were no so hard-working player like Lou Gehrig in the history. This movie is a story about honest base ball player, Lou Gehrig in New York Yankees. In the period of Great Depression, he gave the people hope through the base ball. This movie is started from the young Lou. His mother was a strong supporter for him. She really wanted to make him engineer like his uncle Otto and Lou also tried to follow her desire. She said, “In this country, you can be anything you want.” He could join the baseball team in Columbia University. Suddenly, his mother was sick so she went to a hospital. Lou wanted her to get in private hospital but he did not have much money for it. Therefore, he signed to join a baseball team, Hartford. His father pretended to get a job as a political who can earn 25$ in a week and his mother did not know the truth. Lou was so hard-working player that he could get in the NY Yankees. Even though his mother wants him to be an engineer, she went to baseball game to see his proud son’s game. He made a lot of achievement in Yankees and he met a beautiful Chicago woman and fell in love with her. At last, he got married with her and could make a happy life. Lou was so modest that he practiced and played every time. Until the time of retirement, he had played 2130 games in MLB. It was an amazing record ever in MLB history. Unfortunately, he had got unnamed sick and had struggled to play well. This ill made him died called as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

1. Sports in Great Depression

24 Oct 1929, there was a black Thursday in stock market. US economy was fallen down and life of people went to down. In this period, baseball is a kind of hope for American. Between 1929 and 1932, import and export went to down up to 30% compared to before. This harsh period made the people jobless and quality if life was falling down. Even they were struggling to manage their life, baseball was most popular sports to enjoy for everyone.

2. Immigrant

Lou family was an immigrant from Germany. Her mother was doing like cooking, and cleaning house. His father did not have regular job. His mother tried to make him well-educated person like his uncle Otto. She did not want to make him like them. Immigrant had to be harder to get success. She said “In this country, you can be anything you want.” This sentence shows that America has been an opportunity country for immigrant. We could find immigrant family in this movie anyway.

3. Passion for education

Education is a basic step to get success in a society. In this movie, Lou’s mother brings him to Columbia University. At last, he got a chance to play for the university and was called ‘Babe Ruth in CU’. His family was an immigrant family so the passion for education was quite significant for them. As period goes, the importance of education looks more valuable.

His biography is like a sad novel because of his early death. His life has been a legend to the people. If you want to know more about his misfortune life, you can visit official website of Lou Gehrig.

King Kong Classic_Great Depression_My 10th Movie

King Kong Classic_Great Depression_My 10th Movie

Everyone have been heard about King Kong before. This movie is a story about King Kong and a beautiful woman. Actually, the background of this movie is in the period of great depression. There was a beautiful woman. She was picked up by film producer in New York. At that time, she was stoling something in street shop, it means she was struggling with her life. Great depression Period was so hard time for every American. She got his suggestion to be an actress and got on the big ship. They were going to some island to take a film, that island was very undeveloped and lived some tribe. The team for film arrived at the island, the tribe were having some ceremony. They saw the beautiful girl and chased from them. She was lke a present for King Kong. The team tried to save her but most of them were killed by dinosaurs. At last, one guy who love her saved her and took her to the ship. Even though they catched King Kong and brought it to NY. However, King Kong escaped the show and tried to find the girl. King Kong was trying to save her in the island from dangerous things and loved her actually. The pity King Kong was killed by fighting plane at the top of Empire States building. I think this movie is world wide loved movie, King Kong is not a human though. I picked some characteristics up in this movie about Great Depression Period.

1. Transportation

I could see numerous transportation in this movie. First one is a yellow taxi. It was my first time to see the taxi in the movies. Tram, Steamship and airplane was also the result of Industrial Revolution. Even though these transportation made US economy booming up, Great depression made US economy dropped off. I found a lot of new transportation in this period.

2. Great Depression

In 1930s, there was a great depression in US. It made US economy and people groomy and sad.
Unemployment was up to 70% in the period. In this movie, the girl also was in hard period. She got a chance to earn the money and she got on the steamship. Great Depression leaded a lot of people to work whatever they can.

3. Pioneer Spirit

Even though pioneer period was ended already, they were going to veiled island with the mind of pioneer. They tried to take a film to ceremony and King Kong. I could feel they are so aggressive to find new one. I think it is kind of Pioneer sprit of them.

4. Skyscraper

I saw Empire state building one of the tallest building in the world before. There were a lot of tall building compared to former period. They were already developed some part in society.

5. Love
I could find two love story in this movie. First one is between the actress and the sailor. Second one is one side love from King Kong to the woman.

Jimmie Rodgers_country singer

Jimmie Rodgers_Country Singer

"The father of country music has had a profound impact on all of our lives and touched our souls with his simple but unique way with music. The Jimmie Rodgers Foundation devotes their time and effort to preserve the heritage of country music by special events throughout the year. "

I could find this sentence in the website of his foundation.
Yes! He was the first country music superstar. He has been known The Singing Brakeman and The Blue Yodeler, I did not know him at all though.

I have heard his name before, but I did not listen his song at all. After getting the CD, I could listen his song first! In my MP3, there are two songs of him; Jimmies Texas Blue, Mule Skinner Blue.

He was born in Pine Springs, Mississippi,USA but considered his hometown to be Meridian, Mississippi, and spent most of his early life from boyhood accompanying his father on rail road jobs. He eventually became a railroad brakeman, an extremely dangerous and highly skilled job.
This back ground had affected his music.

His songs, most of which he wrote himself, were typically either sentimental songs about home, family and sweethearts and his beloved railroads and railroaders, on his own hard life and happy marriage. He was also famous for unique vocal quality in his song. His voice is powerful and haunting. His sound is like no other and once heard, is never forgotten. Fundamentally, Rodgers was a white blues singer, singing traditional blues lyrics and accompanying himself on guitar and yodel, which was nothing like classic Swiss yodeling.

One of his song was selected by CNN as "Songs of the Century"; "BLUE YODEL (T FOR TEXAS)" and when the Country Music Hall of Fame was established in 1961, Rodgers was one of the first three to be inducted. He was also elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame and his song "Blue Yodel No. 9" is ranked No. 23 on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

The 113 songs he recorded have hardly ever been out of print. His musical career lasted only six years. He died from tuberculosis in 1933 in the Taft Hotel, New York at age 35. His last recordings were made in Manhattan a week before his death.

Blue Yodel No.9
Standing on the corner I didn't mean no harm When a big policeman Grabbed me by the arm
Now, it was down in Memphis On the corner of Beale and Main He said "Now, hey big boy I'm
gonna have to know your name" Now, you can find my name On the tail of my shirt I'm a
Tennessee hustler And I never have to work But I'm telling all you rounders You best leave my women alone I'll take my .38 Special And I'll run you rounders home.

Roaring Twenties_State Fair_My 9th Movie

Roaring Twenties_State Fair_My 9th Movie

'Our state fair is a great state fair
Don’t miss it , don’t even be late'

It is the happenings during the state fair in IOWA. There was a happy family and they were going to annual state fair. The father wanted to win the prize in Pig competition and the mother wanted it in cooking competition. One sister and brother had a problem before the fair. The sister did not want to marry the rich guy in her town and the brother had some problem his lover. In the state fair, they were meeting lover coincidentally. Even though they had their own job, they had been fallen in love each other. The sister was meeting the newspaperman and the brother was meeting the singer. They had a great time in the fair. Their father also got the prize they had wanted for a long time. They were so happy in the fair. However, they should be separated in each way again at the last day. They were coming back with sadness of breaking up. At the last scene of movie, they were coming together again and finishing with happy ending. This movie shows stereo type of 1920s people and life. I have got some characteristics in this movie.

1. Appearance of Women

In this period, women could start to vote, so activities for women were increasing. The State fair also had many events for women like cooking competition. Women seemed more confident than before through fashion as well.

2. No Black people

Even thought 1920s had release of slavery, there were no black people in this movie. White dominated society was brought to give the right to vote for the black.

3. Farm(Settlement)

They were settled in one town and made a farm for living. They did not move frequently and stayed one place. That’s why they can be farmer as a job.

4. loyalty for their states

After settlement, they were living one place and could have loyalty for their States. They loved their States and nature. In this movie, I could see a lot of people who were singing about their lovely States. It might be going to patriotism as well about US.

5. Food (Hamburgers and Popcorns)

It was the first time to see the people who were eating modern foods just like a hamburger and Popcorns. Roaring twenties was the change period to change to the modern culture. In the State fair, there were a lot of modern things such as roller coaster,

6. Family

This family in the movie looks so happy. Even though, US take value on individualism, family is so important factor for them. Making family through marriage and keeping family with happiness looks quite significant for them.

7. Development of Machines

I could find more cars than before age. Through Industrial age, the development of machine was going on and I could see some modern machine such as car and truck. In addition to, I could see the desire of modern machine in the farm. The development had changed not only life but also thought in that period.
